This fundraising pamphlet from the Carver Center’s 1961 expansion effort featured a painting by Juliette Whittaker on its cover and began with the story of Billy Jones, one of the children whom Whittaker mentored.

In the words of Billy, an eleven year-old sixth grade student from Lincoln School (which Richard also attended for a year), “I learned to smile at the Center. Miss Whittaker says I never used to smile…but I do smile.”

The pamphlet emphasized how each child received counseling at the Carver — counseling crucial to help them through hard times.
