This photograph is a study in telling contrasts.
If one focuses on his features, Harold Parker looks very much — with his tweezed eyebrows, smooth cheeks, trimmed moustache, and styled locks of hair — the owner of a club that was open to all sorts of customers, black or white, gay or straight, young or old.
But the grim look on his face and his bandaged hand reveal that Parker was also a fighter, who could be quick with his fists to settle an argument.
