{"id":4181,"date":"1946-06-03T02:19:51","date_gmt":"1946-06-03T02:19:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.becomingrichardpryor.com\/pryors-peoria\/?p=4181"},"modified":"2013-06-04T22:36:12","modified_gmt":"2013-06-04T22:36:12","slug":"hazel-pritcher-to-george-houser","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.becomingrichardpryor.com\/pryors-peoria\/1946\/06\/03\/hazel-pritcher-to-george-houser\/","title":{"rendered":"Letter from Hazel Pritcher to George Houser"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In her letter to national CORE president George Houser, Peoria CORE active member Hazel Pritcher detailed the group&#8217;s recent sit-ins at various restaurants including &#8216;The Pantry&#8217; \u2014 an eatery that refused service to Richard Pryor thirteen years later \u2014and their recent\u00a0efforts to convince a local high school to revise a planned performance of a blackface minstrel show.<\/p>\n<p>An excerpt\u00a0concerning\u00a0the minstrel show reads:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;CORE president asked the principal and music teacher of one of the High Schools to modify a &#8216;Ministrel&#8217; they planned to give. She asked to modify blackface, pig-tails, dialect and words such as &#8216;darky&#8217; and &#8216;pickaninny.&#8217; She was referred to the Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Davis, who wanted to &#8216;if it was an isolated idea or nationwide&#8217;.
