About the author

Scott Saul has written on American culture and politics for The New York TimesHarper’s, The NationBoston ReviewBookforumand other publications. He is the author of Freedom Is, Freedom Ain’t: Jazz and the Making of the Sixties (Harvard University Press, 2003), winner of the American Book Award.

He teaches courses in American culture and history at the University of California at Berkeley, where he is an associate professor of English.

He lives in Berkeley with his wife and son.
