In 1966, several Peorians were indicted by the FBI for their involvement in running a large prostitution ring. The organization spanned several states and was thus a major felony that warranted the direct involvement of J. Edgar Hoover. The first charged was Elmer Poos, who had come up in Peoria as a petty criminal just as the semi-legitimate side of prostitution was being stamped out in the city.
