Twenty-six year old Clarence Shivers painted the mural depicting prominent figures in “Negro achievement” with the intent of showing that “children as well as adults must fight to reach the top.”

Shivers, a World War II veteran who pursued a degree in painting on the GI Bill, centered his mural on the African-American push for full equality in American life.
