An intriguing photo from behind the bar at the Pryor family’s tavern, The Famous Door. The tavern would be permanently shuttered in 1950, but was once a lively club on the 300 block of North Adams Street, just one block from the Pryor family brothels on North Washington Street.

The photograph is in many senses undramatic: we just see an empty bar and lots of bottles. But the very existence of this photograph in the Pryor family’s collection speaks volumes, suggesting how the family took pride in The Famous Door’s operation.
