Possessing “intoxicating liquor” proved to be an expensive offense for Marie Carter (formerly known as Marie Pryor and later referred to as Marie Bryant). She was arrested and paid a grand total of $28.15 for this infraction.

“Three arrests were made Sunday night when police officers raided a home in 1260 East Sangamon street. Marie Carter, arrested for the possession of intoxicating liquor, pleaded guilty and was fined $25.15 by Judge J.G. Allen. Mack Williams , 1240 E. Sangamon, pleaded guilty to the sale of liquor. Unable to pay the fine of $53.15, he was placed in the city jail. The other arrest was William Harris, 845 North Illinois street, for congregating to drink, $6.15.”
