Only sixteen months into their marriage, Marie Pryor attended a ‘grand ball’ by herself — and was beaten by her husband for it. She then filed an assault charge against him.

“Roy Pryor, Colored, Plead Guilty for An Assault on Spouse.
Roy Pryor, colored, 262 East Main Street, pleaded guilty before Justice J Edward Saxton Monday morning to a charge of assaulting his wife and threatening to kill her. He was fined $5.34. Pryor’s assault was provoked, it is alleged, by Mrs. Pryor’s attending a grand ball some place where Pryor wasn’t along.”
